I had an “ah-ha” moment this morning about how the purpose of life in this 3rd Dimension of duality and separation is really about discovering ourselves, about understanding who we really are as divine beings.
We often wonder, perhaps even astonished by, why we have to experience so much darkness and adversity in life. But it has become clear to me that this realm of duality is the perfect mechanism to wake us up to the truth that we are the creators of the circumstances in our lives. We may unconsciously stumble through this life and many others, but eventually we will get it.
You see, we can’t see and appreciate all the good things in life without first experiencing their opposite. Really, how do we know what good is until we clearly see what it isn’t? And when we’ve had enough of what we don’t want, we will at that point take conscious control of the reins and start focusing on what we DO want.
As I thought through this, the film It’s A Wonderful Life came to mind. If you haven’t seen the film, you’re depriving yourself of a classic … and a good cry! I highly recommend it, as it’s one of my all-time favorites.
In the film’s story, George Bailey gets frustrated with the darkness and hardships in the world and wishes he’d never been born, assuming everyone would better off without him. His guardian angel grants him that wish, and takes him on a journey to experience what life would have been without his influence, most of which he was never aware. Of course, it has a happy, uplifting ending that makes me cry every time (no matter how many times I’ve seen it!), as he realizes he really has had a wonderful life.
Now, most of us don’t have the luxury of interacting with our guardian angel in such a physical way, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there, ready and willing to help at all times. We simply have to choose to approach life from that perspective.
The point is that we can choose to live our lives focusing on the negative, or we can choose to focus on the many blessings all around us. We may not see them at first, but that’s only because we aren’t looking for them. Start to look for them and acknowledge them … and then be amazed at how abundant they truly are!
Yes, it really is a wonderful life, and this world of seeming separation and duality is a wonderful system to lead us to that conclusion … in fact, it’s perfect, and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience it!
